Why Munnar Is Still the Favourite Hill Trip from Kozhikode
Munnar sits at around 1,600 metres in the Western Ghats, in Kerala’s Idukki district. The name comes from “moonu aar”, meaning three rivers, because the Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala rivers meet here.
Most people from Malabar know it for the tea estates, but what keeps groups coming back is the variety. In two days you can see the Nilgiri tahr at Eravikulam, go boating on Mattupetty reservoir, stand at a viewpoint on the Kerala and Tamil Nadu border, and drink tea at a factory that still processes leaves the old way.

Which route is best from Kozhikode to Munnar?
Most of our drivers take the route through Ramanattukara, Kuttippuram, Thrissur, Angamaly, Perumbavoor and Kothamangalam. From there you join the Kochi to Dhanushkodi highway (NH 85) through Neriamangalam and Adimali into Munnar.
The last stretch after Adimali is where the ghat section begins. The curves and climbs here need a driver who knows the road well. Kerala Tourism also lists other ways to reach Munnar by rail and air if part of your group is joining from elsewhere.
A nice bonus on this route is the pair of waterfalls near Neriamangalam. Cheeyappara and Valara falls sit right beside the highway, so your group gets its first photo stop without any detour.
Should we start at night or early morning?
We usually suggest leaving Calicut between 4 and 5 in the morning. You reach Munnar by early afternoon, check in, and still have the evening for the tea museum or a walk in town.
Night journeys save a hotel day on paper. But the ghat roads near Munnar get heavy mist after dark, and a tired group on day one is never fun. Your driver also needs proper rest to handle the hill roads safely the next day.
Top Places to Visit in Munnar on a Group Tour
These are the spots our groups enjoy most. We have grouped them by direction because that is how you should plan your days in Munnar. Mixing routes wastes hours in traffic.
Eravikulam National Park and Rajamala
Eravikulam National Park is home to the Nilgiri tahr, an endangered mountain goat found only in the southern Western Ghats. Anamudi, the highest peak in South India at 2,695 metres, stands inside the park.
Vehicles park at the entry point and visitors go up to Rajamala in forest department buses, so your tourist vehicle does not need to climb. Go early, as the queue grows fast on weekends.
The park usually closes during February and March for the tahr calving season. Check the Kerala Forest Department for the latest notice before you fix your dates.
Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point and Kundala Lake
All three sit on the same road towards Top Station, which makes this the easiest half day of the trip. Mattupetty has speedboat rides and the Indo Swiss dairy farm nearby. Echo Point is exactly what it sounds like, and every college group ends up shouting their class name across the lake. Kundala has pedal boats and shikara rides with pine trees around the water.
Top Station
About 32 kilometres from Munnar town, Top Station looks down into the Theni valley of Tamil Nadu. On a clear morning, the view is the best in the region. After 11 or so, clouds often roll in, so keep this stop early if you can.
Tata Tea Museum
Located at the Nallathanni estate of Kanan Devan Hills Plantations, the museum walks you through Munnar’s tea history, from the first plantations of the 1880s to present day processing. There is a working demonstration of how fresh leaves become tea. It suits school and college groups, and it makes a good plan for the evening you arrive.
Attukal Waterfalls and Pothamedu Viewpoint
A short drive out of town on the Pallivasal side. Attukal is at its best after the monsoon, between September and December. Pothamedu gives a wide view of tea, coffee and cardamom plantations, and it is a good sunset spot.
Marayoor, Lakkam Waterfalls and Chinnar
If you have a third day, head north on the Udumalpet road. Lakkam falls has a small natural pool where people can safely get their feet wet. Marayoor is known for its natural sandalwood forest, Stone Age dolmens and the famous Marayoor jaggery.
Further on, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary sits in the rain shadow region and looks completely different from the rest of Munnar. It is dry and rocky, with a good chance of spotting the grizzled giant squirrel.
Kolukkumalai Sunrise
Kolukkumalai is known as one of the highest organic tea estates in the world, and the sunrise here is the kind people talk about for years. The final stretch from Suryanelli is an off road jeep track. Tempo travellers and buses stop at Suryanelli, and the group continues in local jeeps. Plan for a 4 am start.

Best Time to Visit Munnar
September to December: After the monsoon, the hills are deep green and the waterfalls are full. This is our favourite season for group trips.
December and January: Cold nights, sometimes close to zero in estate areas like Sevenmallay and Lakshmi. Families from the plains love this.
March to May: Warm in the rest of Kerala but pleasant in Munnar, which makes it a common choice for summer holiday trips.
June to August: Monsoon season. Munnar is beautiful in the rain, but landslides and road blocks do happen on the Adimali stretch, and outdoor sightseeing gets limited. Keep a flexible plan and check road conditions with us before you leave.
