Bros Travels

Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa.

If your group is heading to Sabarimala from Calicut this Mandala season, booking a bus is simple. Send us your travel date, the number of swamis and your pickup point on WhatsApp or call +91 98950 23920. We will suggest the right vehicle, from a 12-seater Tempo Traveller for a family group to a 49-seater AC bus for a full temple sangham, and give you a clear quote before anything is confirmed.

We have been running pilgrimage trips out of Balussery since 2016, and Sabarimala season is the busiest stretch of our year. This guide puts together everything Calicut groups usually ask us: season dates, the route, where the bus actually stops, and which vehicle fits your group.

Quick answer: Calicut to Pamba is about 315 to 325 km by road, which takes roughly 7 to 9 hours by bus with tea and prayer stops. Tourist buses park at the Nilakkal base camp, and pilgrims take the KSRTC chain service to Pamba before the 5 km climb to Sannidhanam. Book your darshan slot on the official Virtual Queue first, then book the bus around that slot.

Why Calicut Groups Prefer a Private Bus for Sabarimala

There is no direct train to Sabarimala. The nearest railhead is Chengannur, which the Pathanamthitta district administration puts at about 93 km from Pamba. Going by public transport from Calicut means changing trains and buses at least twice, with your irumudi on your head and a group that keeps getting split up.

A hired bus takes that headache away. A few reasons our regulars keep coming back every Vrischikam:

  • The whole group travels together. Nobody gets left behind at a station, and the Guruswamy can keep an eye on everyone, especially first-time kanni swamis.
  • You leave when you want. Most groups prefer starting after the evening pooja or bhajan so they reach Nilakkal by early morning.
  • Your irumudi stays safe. There is room to keep it with care instead of squeezing it into a crowded KSRTC rack.
  • Stops are your choice. Erumely for Petta Thullal, Guruvayur on the way back, or a simple sadya stop. Just tell us beforehand.
  • Elders are more comfortable. Pushback seats and AC options make a long overnight journey easier for older devotees.

Sabarimala 2026–27 Season Dates to Plan Around

The temple opens only on set days in the Malayalam calendar, so your bus booking has to match these dates. For the 2026–27 pilgrimage season:

EventDate
Mandala season opens16 November 2026, 5 PM
Mandala Pooja (temple closes at night)27 December 2026
Temple reopens for Makaravilakku30 December 2026, 5 PM
Makaravilakku14 January 2027
Season closes20 January 2027

Dates are based on the published temple calendar. Always confirm with the Travancore Devaswom Board before you finalise travel, because small changes do happen.

Book Your Virtual Queue Slot Before You Book the Bus

Darshan at Sabarimala runs on the Travancore Devaswom Board’s Virtual Queue system. For this season, booking opened on 29 October 2026, with the daily darshan limit set at 80,000 pilgrims including spot bookings. Peak days fill up quickly.

Here is what we tell every group: get your Virtual Queue slot on sabarimalaonline.org first, for every member. Once you know your slot date and time, we plan the departure backwards from it so you reach Nilakkal with enough buffer for the chain bus and the climb.

Calicut to Sabarimala by Bus: How the Journey Actually Goes

The Usual Route

Most of our Sabarimala trips from Calicut take the inland route:

Calicut → Kottakkal → Thrissur → Angamaly → Muvattupuzha → Pala → Erumely → Nilakkal

This works out to around 320 km to Pamba. If your group wants to visit Guruvayur, we can go via Tirur and Guruvayur and join the Ernakulam stretch instead. It adds a little time but many families like starting with Guruvayurappan’s darshan. You can see the other road options on the Kerala Tourism Sabarimala page.

Stops Most Groups Make

  • Erumely: Petta Thullal at the Dharma Sastha temple and a visit to Vavar Swamy’s mosque. A must for kanni swamis.
  • Tea stops along Thrissur and Pala: Our drivers know which places stay open through the night during the season.
  • Guruvayur (optional): Usually on the way back, when the group is relaxed and the vratham is complete.

What Happens at Nilakkal

This is the part first-timers often don’t know. Nilakkal is the base camp and main parking ground for Sabarimala. Tourist buses and travellers park here; they do not go up to Pamba and wait. From Nilakkal, pilgrims take the KSRTC chain service to Pamba, roughly 22 km away. For this season, KSRTC is deploying around 950 buses for the pilgrimage, with a continuous chain service on the Nilakkal to Pamba stretch.

From Pamba it is about 5 km on foot to Sannidhanam via Neelimala. After darshan, you come back down to Pamba, take the chain bus to Nilakkal, and your driver will be waiting at the parking ground.

Tip from our drivers: Save the driver’s number before you leave the bus and note your parking ground or bay at Nilakkal. On peak days the grounds look the same in the dark, and this one habit saves a lot of searching later.

A Typical Overnight Plan

Timings depend on traffic, your Virtual Queue slot and how many stops you take, but a common plan looks like this:

TimeWhat happens
9:00 PMKettunira at home or temple, depart Calicut
Around midnightTea break near Thrissur
Early morningReach Erumely, Petta Thullal if planned
MorningReach Nilakkal, park, board the KSRTC chain bus
As per your slotClimb from Pamba, darshan, return to Pamba
EveningChain bus back to Nilakkal, start the return journey
Next morningBack in Calicut

Which Vehicle Should You Book for Sabarimala?

Pick the vehicle based on your headcount plus a little space for irumudi and bags. Here is how we usually match groups:

Group sizeSuggested vehicleGood for
Up to 6Innova or Etios carSmall family groups, quick trips
10 to 1212-seater luxury Tempo TravellerFamilies who want extra comfort
13 to 1714 or 17-seater Tempo Traveller, 16-seater UrbaniaNeighbourhood or office groups
18 to 2620-seater AC Tempo Traveller, 26-seater Tempo TravellerMedium temple groups
27 to 3434-seater bus or 34-seater AC Air BusLarge sanghams
35 to 4949-seater AC Air BusFull temple or association trips

See photos and details of every vehicle on our vehicles page. For smaller groups of four or five, our cab service in Calicut is often the better fit.

AC or Non-AC for a Sabarimala Trip?

Honestly, both work. The overnight run is cool once you cross into the hills after Erumely, so many younger groups are happy going non-AC. If you have elders, small children or plan to travel back during the afternoon heat, AC makes the trip far more comfortable. Tell us who is travelling and we will give you a straight answer.

Why Pilgrims Trust Bros Tours & Travels for Sabarimala

We started in 2016 as a small bus rental in Balussery, and pilgrim trips have been part of our work from the beginning. Our drivers know the Kerala ghats, the highways and the Sabarimala route well, including how Nilakkal parking works on a crowded Mandala morning. Many of our customers mention their driver by name in our Google reviews, which tells you how much we care about who sits behind the wheel.

  • Experienced pilgrimage-route drivers who have done the Calicut to Nilakkal run many times
  • Vehicles checked before every trip, with extra attention to brakes and tyres for the hill section
  • Respect for the vratham: clean vehicles and space for irumudi. Tell us if your group wants bhajans on the way
  • 24/7 support for the whole journey, because things don’t always go to plan at 3 AM

Practical Tips for a Safe Sabarimala Bus Trip

  • Carry your Virtual Queue confirmation and a valid photo ID for every member.
  • Keep luggage light. You will climb with only the irumudi and essentials.
  • Leave gold and valuables at home.
  • Pack regular medicines for elders, plus water and some dry snacks.
  • Avoid carrying plastic. It is restricted in the Sabarimala area.
  • Wear the same colour or a group badge so you can spot each other in the crowd.
  • Follow police and Devaswom instructions at Nilakkal and Pamba. They change with crowd levels.
